2019 marked the 20th anniversary of Voigtländer Classic Line lenses. The 50mm f2 promises to be Voigtländer's best performance standard lens ever.
The Apo-Lanthar designation is given to extremely high performance lenses in the Voigtländer lens lineup, with APO being derived from the apochromatic optical design.
A need for apochromatic optical designs that reduce the longitudinal chromatic aberrations of the three primary colours (RGB) of light to practically zero arose with the increasing popularity of colour film. Now, with high-resolution digital sensors, the need for extremely high-level control of chromatic aberration is even more pertinent than when colour film was introduced.
This lens comprises 10 elements in 8 groups. Five have abnormal partial dispersion glass, two aspherical lens surfaces and a built-in floating focus system.
The 50mm f2 Apo-Lanthar is exceptional and gives new meaning to the word "Standard"!

Optically speaking, this is the finest standard lens I have ever used - noticeably superior to the Sony/Zeiss 55mm f1.8 ZA that I owned previously. The all-metal body is nicely machined and finished, too - being hopefully a pointer to the ultimate longevity of this lens. You are also usefully provided with two (plastic) front lens caps, each emblazoned with the Voigtlander logo - one that attaches directly to the lens itself (49mm), and one that attaches to the front of the lens hood (58mm): a nice touch, but look after them as I suspect the cost of genuine replacements could be disproportionate! However, I do feel obliged to mention the following:Price Quality Value
1) E-mount users are supplied with a metal screw-in lens hood, but the Leica VM edition provides the option of a bespoke bayonet-fitting hood. Why the difference?
2) The warranty period lasts only 12 months, which does seem a tad mean by today's standards
3) It's helpful to have a depth-of-field scale engraved onto the lens, but this one appears surprisingly compressed for a 50mm lens - and that makes it harder to use effectively
4) Some obvious weather-sealing wouldn't go amiss. I'm afraid that any kind of a gasket or lip around the rear base plate is conspicuous only by its absence!
5) The metalwork (possibly brass) can become exceptionally cold to the touch, when temperatures fall
6) The supplied printed instructions are next to useless. I recommend that you download a PDF instruction manual from www.cosina.co.jp/voigtlander/english
